Sandy Bay Arena – Howard Starr Civic Centre and VLT Lounge
The facility is named after the late Chief Howard Starr, an avid hockey fan who commissioned the facility to be built in the early ’70s for the then local popular hockey team Sandy Bay Flying Feathermen. The centre has an Olympic sized skating rink with artificial ice and is open from November to late April. Located in the Arena is an upstairs viewing lounge, lower level changing rooms, VLT Lounge and fast food outlet.
Arena Recreation department provides services to community members. The department is funded by revenue of the VLT program. All initiatives taken to Chief and Council for programs are provided for community members. The program networks with all departments within Sandy Bay such as; Isaac Beaulieu Memorial School, Health Centre, Sandy Bay Child and Family Services, Community Complex, Human Resources and Administration. All repairs and maintenance to the arena are provided by the local staff.
