IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEALTH NOTICE
SANDY BAY RESIDENTS

Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation/Isaac Beaulieu Memorial School Families

Two cases of pertussis, also called “whooping cough” has been reported in our community. While these cases have been confirmed to one household, some children from the household have attended school (K, Gr 8 & 9) and are now showing symptoms consistent with pertussis, though their cases have not yet been confirmed.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads through coughing or sneezing. Early symptoms often resemble a common cold (sneezing, runny nose, mild fever, and cough) but can develop into severe coughing fits, which may be followed by a “whooping” sound, vomiting, or difficulty breathing. It is especially dangerous for infants and young children. Symptoms can appear 5 to 21 days after infection.

We encourage all families to monitor for the above symptoms for the next three weeks. If your child comes down with cold symptoms followed by a persistent cough, it may be necessary to have your child evaluated by a physician. Tell the doctor that pertussis has been reported in your community. If diagnosed, early treatment with antibiotics can help reduce symptoms and prevent further spread.

The pertussis booster “Tdap” (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) is part of the Manitoba Routine Immunization Schedule. Please talk to your Public Health Nurse or Medical Provider regarding your child/children(s) immunizations.

To protect our community, we urge everyone to:
â€Ē Ensure vaccinations are up to date.
â€Ē Practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing and covering coughs.
â€Ē Keep children home if they are experiencing symptoms.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Shirley Asham or Jody Levasseur at Sandy Bay Health Centre (204) 843-2304. Thank you for helping us maintain the health and safety of our community.
